Regulation on Ecodesign for Sustainable Products published
Last 30th March the European Commission published a package part of the European Green Deal to boost Circular Economy and ‘make sustainable products the norm in Europe’. The package consists of three proposals: a proposal for a Regulation on Ecodesign for Sustainable Products, a review of the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) and new rules to empower consumers in the green transition and fight greenwashing. The package also includes a new EU Strategy for Sustainable Textiles.
Regarding the Regulation on Ecodesign for Sustainable Products, it aims to define rules to make products more durable, reliable, reusable, upgradable, reparable, easier to maintain and refurbish, and energy and resource efficient. It will also address the substances that inhibit circularity to make products easier to remanufacture and recycle. It will apply ‘to the broadest possible range of products’ and will use the Ecodesign approach; it means that the new regulation establishes a framework that will enable product-level rules to be laid down and, in a second stage, through delegated acts, product by product or for groups of products. The European Commission plans to launch a public consultation on the categories of products to be selected under the first Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation working plan by the end of 2022.
Finally, the proposal will also set information requirements for products and a Digital Product Passports (DPP) will be implemented for all regulated products. The information to be included in the DPP will be determined when preparing product-specific rules.
The Regulation on Ecodesign for Sustainable Products is expected to be ready by mid-2023. CECE will assess in detail the European Commission’s proposal and evaluate its impact for our sector.
