Political guidelines of Ursula von der Leyen for the next European Commission 2019-2024
On Tuesday 16th July, the European Parliament elected Ursula von der Leyen, former Defence Minister of Germany, as President of the European Commission, with a narrow majority of 383 votes (just surpassing the required absolute majority of 374) against 327 and 22 abstentions.
The Parliament’s vote was based on a set of 'Political Guidelines for the next European Commission 2019-2024', which form an outline of von der Leyen's policy and legislative programme.
These priorities are based on 6 'headline ambitions':
- A European Green Deal
- An economy that works for people
- A Europe fit for the digital age
- Protecting our European way of life
- A stronger Europe in the world
- A new push for European democracy
Of interest for the construction equipment industry is the announced European Green Deal, a set of policies aimed at achieving carbon-neutrality by 2050 mainly by increasing emission reduction (with the extension of the ETS - Emission Trading System to other sectors including construction), circular economy and clean technologies.
CECE will monitor to which extent the announced Green Deal may impact the construction equipment sector, as well as the whole construction value chain.
